World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading
Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as damage from PvE and crit chance.
If the template for upgrading a weapon is in %, the weapon will be able to gain an additional 3% of the previous damage for every time it is upgraded.
Item upgrading costs crests and the current level of the item. The cost increases as the item level increases.
Components
Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra effect when they're used. They can be obtained through making crafts, buying from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot for them. The item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level for a component to be inserted. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.
A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it's used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of that equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.
A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defence attributes of a weapon, or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop or obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.
The player can have up to five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a better-quality version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even when they're not sure what will be improved following a reset.
If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly, and there is a significant chance that the item could become obsolete or even break if it fails. A unsuccessful upgrade could destroy Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the risk of failure. Some upgrades also give an additional bonus when reinserted.
Glyphs

Leveling
The system of upgrading items lets players increase the effectiveness of specific items by putting upgraded components in them. This is referred to as "upping". When the player upgrades an item, the base item is replaced with a different item of the same kind. This means that the same armor piece will become an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item comes with its own set bonus. This could be a problem, as it can make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

Certain upgrades can increase their value and allow players to personalize their equipment. Requirements
The upgrade of items allows players to upgrade the level of their equippable equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets over ilvl 385 by presenting the appropriate currency and items to an item upgrader NPC. The upgrade of armor set pieces will also increase the base defense of that piece, while upgrading weapons will increase the damage base and the strength and dexterity required to match the requirements of the upgraded equipment.
All items can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear which can have eight upgrades. Each when you upgrade an item, it has a chance to fail--the failure rate increases the more you exceed the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures can cause the item to return to its initial state, which requires the player to purchase more materials than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.
